Story

1 | The Job

The story follows Emma, a young woman trapped in a soulless corporate job, yearning for purpose and fulfillment. When she gets fired, her life takes an unexpected turn, leading her to a chance encounter with Susan, an elderly woman retiring from her role as a “Mother” in the Familial Services. As Emma grapples with her financial struggles, Susan encourages her to consider a new path as a caregiver, offering solace to those facing life’s most challenging moments.

Susan, however, is not without her own internal conflicts. Having borne witness to countless farewells, her empathy has reached its limit, intensified by the recent passing of her beloved husband. She yearns for retirement, seeking closure from a lifetime of nurturing connections with the dying.

2 | The Sickness

Amidst this emotional turmoil, Emma and Susan embark on their first assignment together, caring for Richard, a middle-aged man battling terminal cancer. His struggle becomes the focal point of Act 2, as he grapples with the decision of when to engage in assisted suicide. As Richard’s emotional journey unfolds, Emma faces an internal conflict of her own—questioning the ethics of profiting from the pain and vulnerability of her patients. Shouldn’t human empathy be freely available?

3 | Life After Death

Through their experiences with Richard, Emma and Susan find strength and resilience, their lives intertwined in unexpected ways. Emma’s newfound empathy and Susan’s mentorship shape their perspectives, as they discover the profound impact of genuine connection in the face of mortality.

Act 3 delves into the aftermath of farewells, with Emma and Susan reflecting on the transformative journey they’ve embarked upon. Emma realizes her calling lies in continuing to provide compassionate care, while Susan finds liberation in her newfound retirement. The legacy of their work inspires those around them, emphasizing the significance of love and empathy in a world yearning for authentic connections.

Finale

Both women are reminded that it’s not about the job but the life that happens around it. As Emma forms a deep bond with a new patient and Susan mentors young caregivers, they epitomize the legacy of love left by their experiences with Richard. The film culminates with a touching memorial service for Richard, where Emma and Susan celebrate his life and the profound impact he had on their own lives. Their final embrace symbolizes the enduring power of compassion and human connection.
