Meet the Butcher Birds — Tanya Gorlow
Tanya Gorlow (she/her) – Producer, Marketing Leader
In this series, we celebrate the exceptional team members that make up Butcher Bird Studios. Today, we’re sitting down with Tanya Gorlow about her role and how it has since evolved at Butcher Bird.
Can you tell us about your background, and what led you to a career in this industry?
I’ve been interested in entertainment since I was very young, and have been happiest when I’m creating things. I started producing to create the art and stories that I was excited about and have been very fortunate to be able to continue to produce as a career.
When did you first begin working with Butcher Bird Studios?
I started in October of 2021, so I’m a noob.
Describe your role in the team, and has it evolved since you first joined?
I both produce and work on our business development side. I come from a marketing and communications background and when I came on as a producer, I couldn’t help but be interested in how we were generating new business and sharing the incredible work the company is doing with the outside world. I am continually inspired and wowed by the innovation and creativity of our team members and I love having the opportunity to help bring that to a wider audience.
What is the most challenging part of your role?
I love a challenge, so I’ll caveat this by saying, “it’s also the most fun part.” As a producer, the biggest challenge is keeping ahead of all the moving pieces. In business development, it’s asking the right questions both internally and externally in order to help find the right relationship fit between parties.
What has been your favorite project with the team?
I’m extremely proud of the Let’s Go With Sydeon project. What the team was able to accomplish was truly amazing. And doing a live stream travel show was a ton of fun – I even discovered places in Los Angeles I didn’t know existed while working on it.
What are you hoping is the next big thing in the industry?
I’m a huge fan of immersive experiences. A lot of the projects that we’ve been exploring would be interweaving those experiences with the metaverse and creating really incredible entertainment that audiences can experience in multiple formats. Creating something where a person could have a new experience when they revisit each version is really, really intriguing to me, as well. I love the idea of interweaving multiple forms of entertainment in really engaging ways and using cutting-edge technology to do so.
What do you wish you knew before starting your career journey?
That it’s a journey, not a destination. I think being so sure of who I was and what I have to offer the world when I started out caused me to be very narrow in what I counted as a success in my life. As I’ve progressed in my career, I’m realizing how many genuinely cool things I’ve done with some very wonderful people and I wish I had the same appreciation for them then. The good news is that it means I’m incredibly grateful for the team and the project that I’m working on now.
